JOB TITLE: Dramaturg

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Producing and Director

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland’s national theatre and occupies a unique position in the hearts and minds of Irish people. It has two theatres; the Abbey, with a capacity of 492 seats, and the Peacock, with a capacity of 132 seats. We produce a year round programme of productions, public readings, talks, workshops and artistic development work. We produce work at home and on tour, which not only showcases Irish and international theatre but also engages with the artistic and civic life of contemporary Ireland The Abbey Theatre, Ireland’s national theatre, is seeking a full time Dramaturg.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implementing the policy of new writing for the Abbey Theatre
  • Developing relationships with writers who have previously been produced by the Abbey
  • Establishing new relationships with Irish and International writers
  • Identifying writers and theatre makers to be commissioned
  • Providing support structures for writers and theatre makers through workshops
  • Supporting the dramaturgical development of commissions
  • Assessing and managing commissioned plays as they develop
  • Managing and acquiring rights and options of plays
  • Managing and responding to unsolicited scripts
  • Acting as dramaturgical support to Abbey productions
  • Interrogating the Abbey repertoire and Irish canon for programming possibilities
  • Liaising with literary agents, executing and implementing writer contracts
  • Any other duties that are deemed reasonable and appropriate

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The post holder will have:

  • An understanding of dramaturgy and script development
  • Excellent knowledge of the Irish canon
  • Excellent knowledge of Irish and international theatre, particularly of new work
  • Experience of working in a busy producing environment
  • A track record in working with playwrights and managing artist relationships
  • A good capacity for managing teams
  • Ability to broker deals and to execute contracts with agents

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Post: 3 years full time contract with the Abbey Theatre.

Annual Salary: A competitive salary, commensurate with experience

Probationary period: 6 months

Holidays: 24 days per annum pro rata (including Good Friday & Christmas Eve)

Public Holidays: 9 Public Holidays per annum

Pension: The Abbey Theatre provides employees with access to a Pension scheme and will match contributions up to 5.5% of salary. Employees must contribute a minimum of 3% to avail of employer contributions. Contributions are made through payroll. Life Assurance: The Abbey Theatre Group Life Assurance plan provides a benefit to all employees of 4 times annual salary in the event of death while in service.
