JOB TITLE:                  Deputy Senior Stage Technician

RESPONSIBLE TO:     Head of Technical Stage

CONTRACT:                 Permanent/39hours per week

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland’s National Theatre, and a significant part of its role is to reflect our evolving cultural, political and social identity. We do this through the creation, development and production of theatre that seeks to interrogate, challenge, gather and inspire a nation and its people, locally, nationally and internationally. We’ve held this inimitable place in the Irish cultural landscape for over 116 years, since before the formation of the Irish state.


The role will join a team of stage technicians who deliver all of the Abbey Theatres work on the Abbey and Peacock stages as well as on stages outside of the building across Ireland and beyond.

This is a practical position and involves a lot of physical activity.




Duties of the Stage Technician:


  • Assist the Head of Technical stage in planning and preparing equipment and stages for all productions in the Abbey Theatre and in any other sites as required


  • Assisting in the safe and efficient fitting-up and getting-out of all productions in both the Abbey, Peacock, touring Theatres and in any other sites as required


  • To maintain and keep clean all stage operations areas including docks, storage, fly tower and grid areas


  • Assisting in the smooth running of each performance by completing all duties as may be reasonably requested, including but not limited to operating the theatres counterweight flying system, operating other stage or automation equipment with appropriate training, stage cues, Fire Marshal, Safety Curtain, and Emergency Evacuation Procedures


  • Read all show reports and continue running repairs/replacement of stage and scenic equipment throughout the run


  • Support and assist the Creative Team as directed by the Head of Technical Stage in conjunction with the Production Manager assigned to the production


  • Attend Production meetings in place of the Head of Technical Stage if required


  • General staging duties


  • Any other duties which are deemed reasonable and appropriate, as assigned by the Head of Technical Stage



The post holder will have:


  • 5 years + experience in a Stage Technical Department.
  • Ability to lead teams
  • Good communication skills
  • A keen interest in learning new skills and ways of working
  • A knowledge of Health and Safety practices and experience of effective implementation
  • Intermediate level of experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint , Office 365 and experience in database maintenance programmes are essential
  • A dynamic and committed approach to theatre.
  • The ability to work well under pressure.

 Skills/Technical Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of counterweight fly systems, staging, rigging and automation equipment and systems.
  • Working at Height and Manual Handling Training evidence of previous training or a willingness to undertake on starting.


  • Post: This is a Full-time permanent role with a 6-month probation period
  • Hours: The normal working hours shall be 39 hours per week. The normal working week will be over 5 day per week between Monday and Saturday
  • Salary: Competitive
  • Annual Leave: 24 days per annum (including Good Friday & Christmas Eve) pro rata
  • Public Holidays: 10 Public holidays per annum.
  • Pension/PRSA: The Abbey Theatre provides employees with access to a pension/prsa scheme and will match contributions up to 5.5% of salary. Employees must contribute a minimum of 3% to avail of employer contributions. Contributions are made through payroll.
